Houaiss worked as a professor of Portuguese and philology, teaching at several institutions, including the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He was an active member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters (Academia Brasileira de Letras – ABL), having been elected in 1971, occupying Chair No. 16. He served as the academy’s president in 1994.
