The St. Francis Dam was a concrete gravity dam located in the San Gabriel Mountains, about 25 miles (40 km) north of Los Angeles. The dam was constructed between 1924 and 1927 by the City of Los Angeles to provide a reliable source of water for the growing population of the city. The dam was designed to be one of the largest in the world at the time, with a height of 315 feet (96 m) and a crest length of 1,200 feet (366 m).
