: On VMFS datastores, you may only see a single .vmdk file – that file is actually the flat VMDK. The descriptor is stored internally in the VMFS metadata.

If you have a flat file but lost the descriptor:

A -flat.vmdk file is the virtual equivalent of a physical hard drive. It contains the raw data—including the guest operating system, installed applications, and user files—written sequentially.
