This paper examines the dichotomy between “macro” (long-term, high-level strategy) and “micro” (moment-to-moment execution) in competitive and strategy games. Using StarCraft, Civilization, and MOBAs as case studies, we analyze how players manage cognitive load across scales. We propose that the “Macrolo” (macro-low) phenomenon—where players excel at strategy but fail in execution—is a key predictor of skill floors.
