To make the free edition work, you must be aggressive about sensor minimization:
| Feature | Free Version | Commercial Version | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | | 100 Sensors | 100 to Unlimited | | Failover Support | No | Yes | | AD/LDAP Integration | No | Yes | | Private Probes (Multi-site) | No | Yes | | Pause for Maintenance | No | Yes | | Map Designer | Limited | Full Access | | Support | Community Forums | Priority Email/Phone |
On average, you can only monitor about 10 to 15 devices comprehensively before hitting the 100-sensor ceiling. Once you reach 100, you cannot add more sensors without upgrading to a paid license (PRTG 500 or higher). 2. Commercial Use Restrictions
Monitoring one server typically requires multiple sensors: one for Ping, one for CPU load, one for Disk Space, and perhaps two for Network Traffic.
Ideal for shops with 2-3 servers and a handful of network switches.
The free version is designed to run on a single Core Server. While PRTG's architecture allows for "Remote Probes" to monitor distributed locations, managing a complex, multi-site environment within a 100-sensor limit is practically impossible. Is the Free Version Worth It?
