Cambodia is experiencing unprecedented rates of urbanization, particularly in Phnom Penh and surrounding provinces. As the city expands, the traditional concept of the Phum (village)—historically defined by tight-knit kinship ties, communal spaces, and wooden vernacular architecture—is being replaced by high-rise developments and gated communities. This paper investigates the socio-spatial transition of the Phum Khmer in the 21st century. By employing a comparative case study of a traditional rural village and a semi-urbanized commune, this research analyzes how traditional social safety nets and community governance function when physical spaces are restructured. The findings aim to propose a framework for "inclusive urbanism" that integrates the intangible heritage of village solidarity into modern planning policies.
