Here, the world seemed to vanish, replaced by a void that looked like a hole in the universe. But as his eyes adjusted, the details emerged. The Night was not empty; it was a different kind of map. Where the day showed geography, the night showed humanity. The darkness was webbed with the golden spiderwebs of cities, pulsing with the electric heartbeat of civilization. The highways were arteries of orange light, carrying people who were eating dinner, sleeping, or falling in love, completely oblivious to the stars above them.
