The Hurrians established a secret base on the Moon at the start of the Cold War, expecting a nuclear conflict to occur within years. However, fifteen years later, humanity has yet to start a war. The Hurrians face a crisis: their calculations suggest that if humans do not destroy themselves soon, they will develop space travel and spread their inherent violence across the galaxy.

Most of us know him for the sweeping galactic politics of Foundation or the cold logic of the Robot series. But tucked away in his massive bibliography is a 1952 novella that hits with a terrifying relevance today:

“We do not wish you harm. We simply know you will harm yourselves.”

Reading this in 2024 feels eerie. The tension in the story doesn't come from space battles; it comes from the Hurrians' sheer bafflement at us. They are confused because humanity hasn't blown itself up yet. From their perspective, we are a broken experiment that is defying the natural order of self-destruction.
