Any deep assessment of this format must mention (Superior Resolution), introduced in 2003. While the standard HDCAM was great for television, SR was built for high-end cinema and mastering. Full Resolution: SR moved to 1920 x 1080.
As digital sensors evolved and solid-state storage (like SxS or CFast cards) became cheaper, the era of "spinning heads and tape" began to fade. The assessment of HDCAM today reveals a format that is largely "legacy."
