This structure allows the script to function on multiple levels. It is a religious satire, poking holes in the complicity of the Afrikaner Dutch Reformed Church, which provided theological justification for apartheid. It is a political cartoon come to life, reducing the grotesque logic of the state to absurdity (a white policeman tries to issue a summons to God). But most powerfully, it is a blues. A lament for the endless, grinding suffering of the Black majority, punctuated by the only weapon the powerless truly possess: laughter. woza albert script
