This paper explores two central questions: (1) How do survivor stories enhance the effectiveness of awareness campaigns? (2) What are the ethical boundaries of using personal trauma for public consumption?
Although not a campaign per se, this used former juvenile offenders’ scary stories to deter crime. Research found it increased criminal behavior because youth identified with the storytellers rather than the warning (Petrosino et al., 2013). Lesson: Story framing must clearly model resilience, not glorify the trauma or perpetrator.
