By the early 2000s, the industry began to recognize the bandwidth limitations of the 4800-baud serial interface. While the newer NMEA 2000 standard (based on CAN bus technology) was being developed to handle high-bandwidth data, NMEA 0183 v3.0 was released to bridge the gap. This version refined the timing and error-checking capabilities of the sentences and ensured backward compatibility with the vast existing fleet of equipment.
