The story takes place on the small island of Kijima, near the bustling city of Osaka. A strange madness begins to spread among the island's inhabitants. In the span of a single week, 31 people commit suicide. The protagonist, a journalist named , visits the island to investigate. He discovers a terrifying theory: the madness may be caused by a parasitic bacteria or organism that lives in the sea, activated by the changing tides.
